Mumbai (International Pronunciation: /’mumbai/ hear the pronunciation) is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra and the most populous city in India. The population of Mumbai is about 3 crore 29 lakh. This city is situated on the west coast of Maharashtra. Mumbai is the city with the highest annual gross income in India and South, West and Central Asia. Mumbai with its suburbs is the fifth largest city in the world. The city of Mumbai is blessed with a natural port and 50% of India’s seaborne cargo flows through this port. Mumbai is also a district. But there is no Zilla Parishad. The city of Mumbai is famous for its rail transport. Vada pav is Mumbai’s first food dish.

In 1661 Charles II of England married Catherine of Braganza and as her dowry Charles leased the seven islands of Bombay to the East India Company. In the middle of the 18th century, the British united the seven islands of Colaba, Little Colaba, Mahim, Mazgaon, Paral, Worli and Malabar Hill to form Mumbai. In the 19th century, Mumbai experienced economic and educational progress and in the 20th century, the foundation of the independence movement was strengthened in Mumbai. When India gained independence in 1947, the city of Mumbai remained in the Mumbai region created by the British. In 1960, after the United Maharashtra Movement, the Marathi-speaking state of Maharashtra was established according to the language-wise provincial structure, and the city of Mumbai became the capital of this new state of Maharashtra. In 1995, the name of the city was officially changed from Bombay to Mumbai when the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition government was in power. Mumbai is the financial and entertainment capital of India. All classes from poor to rich can be seen in Mumbai. Mumbai has become an international city in the current globalization. The original Koli tribe who founded Mumbai lived here. Even today in the city of Mumbai, the residence of the famous Koli tribe can be seen. Important financial institutions like Reserve Bank, Mumbai Stock Market, National Stock Market are located in this city. Many companies have their head offices in Mumbai. A large number of people come to Mumbai from other parts of the country as there are many business and job opportunities available here. Mumbai is the center of Bollywood and Marathi film industry. Sanjay Gandhi National Park, also known as Borivali National Park or Krishnagiri National Park, is located within the limits of Mumbai.
